What Distinguishes the Boho Style?

The word Boho is derived from the word Bohemian and is based on the intellectual rebellion against the stiff bourgeoisie.

The Boho style is therefore characterized by its unconventional and imperfect look.

The Bohemian style of furnishing lives above all from its variety of textiles and home accessories. Cushions, carpets, blankets, vases, wall decorations, candles – the boho-look living room is a place to let off steam, because a real boho sofa is full of cushions.

You also don’t have to be stingy with accessories. Vases, for example – two, three, or four can be placed on the living room table. The look is especially beautiful when you choose vases in different sizes and materials. To match the natural boho look, they can then be fitted with grasses, dried flowers, and feathers.

The basic colors are earthy tones such as sand, cream, and brown. Accents in black provide the appropriate contrast. In any case, the most important basic rule with the Boho style is that it should not be too perfect. The style is characterized by its expression of personality and can easily handle a few highlights from the flea market or homemade unique pieces – it is the imperfection that makes the style perfect!

So, HOW can you actually create this Boho style yourself? Let’s take a look…

How-To: Boho Living Room Decor

A Boho-Style Living Room in Only 5 Easy Steps

  1. Use a lot of cushions and textiles with different patterns – don’t worry if they don’t match. As long as they have the same basic color, the look will be coherent and fitting. Seriously, I have like 10 pillows and cushions of all different designs on my couch and it looks great!
  2. Don’t be squeamish about the quantity of other accessories either. With the boho look, it’s more like “more is more” rather than “less is more”. Add all kinds of little knick knacks! This is perfect for some interesting items from travels or nature.
  3. Rely on natural materials, such as untreated wooden furniture and accessories, bast baskets, and feathers.
  4. Let a few unique pieces move into your living room – an antique chest of drawers from the flea market or a homemade dream catcher make the look unique.
  5. Don’t make it too perfect – the boho look lives from its personality and imperfection, because that’s what makes it really cozy.  It’s all about individuality!

I’m so glad that you defined what boho is because I honestly always thoughts it had something to do with the Caribbean, or beach-like lifestyle, but instead is so much more than what it seems. I love the idea of having earth-looking colors around the house m, it seems like it may give a more relaxed and stress-free environment.

Love your style girl! My home is kind of a farm house/boho theme throughout, and am finding all sorts of inspiration from your article on how to incorporate different pieces. We live in the country, which is why it leans to more of a farmhouse theme, but I have always been a big fan of the boho look. Are you an interior designer?
